In 1789 French war veteran M. Lafayette proposed the French Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen, modeled after the United States Declaration of Independence. It lists a series of inalienable rights that every man should have, and government should module itself to follow these rights; one of the most important rights listed, in my opinion, is the 11th Right which is the freedom of press and speech. What is the value of free speech in this modern age, how has society changed because of this right? In accordance with the French Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen, everyone should have the right to free speech, which I believe to be a crucial part of individual growth.
The exact words of the 11th right is as quoted “free communication of ideas and opinions is one of the most precious of the rights of man. Consequently, every man may speak, write, and print freely, subject to responsibility for the abuse of such liberty in the case is determined by law."
